Regional Awards:

 

Robert “Bob” Bell given 2010 Mid Atlantic Regional Award)

Monongalia County (West Virginia) Board of Health member Robert “Bob” Bell been recognized for donating time and energy in supporting state and local public health issues. At the 18th Annual NALBOH Conference in Omaha, Nebraska, Mr. Bell was honored with the Mid Atlantic Regional Director’s Award for sharing his commitment and expertise in advancing public health.

 

Bell, a resident of Morgantown, was recognized for his service as a local board of health member. While serving, he was instrumental in setting up a low cost loan program for local residents to purchase home sewage treatment units and has been very supportive of the health department’s dental unit mission to provide dental care to underserved children in Monongalia County.

Brian Braginton-Smith given 2010 New England Regional Award
Yarmouth (Massachusetts) Board of Health Chairman Brian Braginton-Smith has been recognized for donating time and energy in supporting state and local public health issues. At the 18th Annual NALBOH Conference in Omaha, Nebraska, Mr. Braginton-Smith was honored with the New England Regional Director’s Award for sharing his commitment and expertise in advancing public health.

 

Braginton-Smith, a resident of Yarmouth, was recognized for his service as a local board of health member. While serving as Chairman, he partnered with the Yarmouth Police Department in setting up a successful pharmaceutical collection program. He is also a Massachusetts Association of Boards of Health representative on a multi-organizational PPCP and Micro constituents Committee.

Margaret Brink given 2010 Midwest Regional Award
Four Corners (Nebraska) Board of Health President Margaret Brink has been recognized for donating time and energy in supporting state and local public health issues. At the 18th Annual NALBOH Conference in Omaha, Nebraska, Mrs. Brink was honored with the Midwest Regional Director’s Award for sharing her commitment and expertise in advancing public health.

 

Brink, a resident of York, was recognized for her service as a local board of health member. She was an initial organizer of the York County Board of Health and has served on the now reorganized Four Corners Board of Health since its inception. Additionally, she serves as Chair for the statewide Nebraska Association for Local Boards of Health. A dedicated advocate, Brink continually seeks opportunities to educate the public and elected officials on the value of public health.

William “Bill” Brown given 2010 West Regional Award
Southwest District (Idaho) Board of Health Chair, William “Bill” Brown has been recognized for donating time and energy in supporting state and local public health issues. At the 18th Annual NALBOH Conference in Omaha, Nebraska, Mr. Brown was honored with the West Regional Director’s Award for sharing his commitment and expertise in advancing public health.

 

Brown, a resident of New Meadows, was recognized for his service as a local board of health member. While serving as Chair, Commissioner Brown volunteered to participate on a task dealing with licensing fees for food establishments. Because of his willingness to donate his time and energy, the seven public health districts in Idaho will be able to sustain programs that directly influence the health of their communities.

Catherine Engel given 2010 East Great Lakes Regional Award )
Vanderburgh County (Indiana) Board of Health member Cathy Engel, PhD, has been recognized for donating time and energy in supporting state and local public health issues. At the 18th Annual NALBOH Conference in Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Engel was honored with the East Great Lakes Regional Director’s Award for sharing her commitment and expertise in advancing public health.

 

Engel, a resident of Evansville, was recognized for her service as a local board of health member. While serving, she has championed efforts to make Vanderburgh County healthier and smoke-free. Engel was involved in the development of the Indiana Association of Local Boards of Health (InALBOH) and served as the association’s  first president. She is knowledgeable and passionate about public health and is dedicated to improving the health of her community and state.

Freddie Nichols given 2010 West Great Lakes Regional Award
Clay County (Missouri) Board of Health member Freddie Nichols has been recognized for donating time and energy in supporting state and local public health issues. At the 18th Annual NALBOH Conference in Omaha, Nebraska, Ms. Nichols was honored with the West Great Lakes Regional Director’s Award for sharing her commitment and expertise in advancing public health.

 

Nichols, a resident of Gladstone, was recognized for her service as a local board of health member. A dedicated individual who strives to make a difference in her community, she has been a committed civic volunteer since the 1960s. Nichols serves on the Clay County Board of Health and was involved in the development of the statewide Missouri Association of Local Boards of Health.

Monica A. Ryan given 2010 Southeast Regional Award
Fulton County (Georgia) Board of Health member Monica A. Ryan has been recognized for donating time and energy in supporting state and local public health issues. At the 18th Annual NALBOH Conference in Omaha, Nebraska, Ms. Ryan was honored with the Southeast Regional Director’s Award for sharing her commitment and expertise in advancing public health.

 

Ryan, a resident of Atlanta, was recognized for her service as a local board of health member. She has also served on local and national public health committees. Additionally, Ms. Ryan has shared her experience with others as an active participant in the NALBOH Board of Health Orientation Workshop at NALBOH’s annual conference for the past several years.

Leadership Awards:

 

Myron Bateman given 2010 Health Officer of the Year Award
Tooele County (Utah) Health Department Director Myron Bateman has been recognized for donating time and energy in supporting state and local public health issues. At the 18th Annual NALBOH Conference in Omaha, Nebraska, Mr. Bateman was honored with the Health Officer of the Year Award for sharing his commitment and expertise in advancing public health.

 

Bateman, a resident of Tooele, was recognized for his service and commitment to the public health of his community and state. A dedicated leader in public health, he is an innovator who is not afraid to try something new in an effort to improve the quality of life for his health department clients. Additionally, he has sacrificed to ensure that Utah’s voice was a part of shaping the standards and measures for National Agency Accreditation.

Rosa DeLauro given 2010 Legislator of the Year Award )
Connecticut Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro has been recognized for donating time and energy in supporting public health issues. At the 18th Annual NALBOH Conference in Omaha, Nebraska, Ms. DeLauro was honored with the Legislator of the Year Award for sharing her commitment and expertise in advancing public health.

 

DeLauro, representing the people of the Third District of Connecticut, has taken a special interest in public health, leading the fight for affordable, quality healthcare. She has been a leading voice for increasing critical cancer research, has fought to increase funding for breast and cervical cancer screenings, worked tirelessly to address the public health crisis of underage drinking, and co-founded the Congressional Food Safety Caucus.

Norma J. Henriksen given 2010 Rev. Everett I. Hageman Award
Recently retired Nassau County (New York) Board of Health member Norma J. Henriksen, RN, has been recognized for donating time and energy in supporting state and local public health issues. At the 18th Annual NALBOH Conference in Omaha, Nebraska, Ms. Henriksen was honored with the Rev. Everett I. Hageman Award for sharing her commitment and expertise in advancing public health. The Hageman Award, named for one of the founding members of NALBOH, is the most prestigious award given to a current or past board of health member who has demonstrated outstanding leadership on a board of health and commitment to, and enthusiasm for, public health.

 

Henriksen, a resident of Oyster Bay Cove, was recognized for her 32 years of service as a local board of health member. While serving on the board of health, Norma Henriksen made many contributions to public health and her community. Highlights include authoring “Article 8” which made Nassau County the first in the state of New York to regulate smoking, instituting a Food Managers’ Training Course requirement, advocating for public and private water supplies to safe drinking water, and serving on numerous state and local level health committees and councils.

Kay Oestmann given 2010 Health Director of the Year Award
Southeast District (Nebraska) Health Department Director Kay Oestmann has been recognized for donating time and energy in supporting state and local public health issues. At the 18th Annual NALBOH Conference in Omaha, Nebraska, Ms. Oestmann was honored with the Health Officer of the Year Award for sharing her commitment and expertise in advancing public health.

 

Oestmann, a resident of Auburn, was recognized for her service and dedication to the public health of her community and state. A passionate leader in public health, she has repeatedly been at the forefront of public health in the state of Nebraska. Oestmann was instrumental in the passage of LB692 which funded the establishment of a statewide public health infrastructure. Thanks to this measure and respected individuals such as Ms. Oestmann, every person living in Nebraska’s 93 counties now has access to local public health—a right that was not available a decade ago.

Aileen Shen given 2010 MacNeal Annual Conference Scholarship Award)
Tufts University (Massachusetts) student Aileen Shen has been selected as the recipient of an $800 scholarship. At the 18th Annual NALBOH Conference in Omaha, Nebraska, Ms. Shen was honored with the MacNeal Annual Conference Scholarship Award. This scholarship program is designed to assist students seeking a degree in the fields of public health, environmental health, health education, or clinical services to participate in the NALBOH Annual Conference and gain the opportunity to learn more about the governing bodies of public health systems.

 

Shen, a resident of Somerville, is working towards her Masters in Public Health (MPH) degree, concentrating in Health Communication. Through her attendance at the NALBOH Annual Conference, she gained insight into public health and was excited to “bridge the gap” between classroom theory and life application.

Dr. Rachel Stevens given 2010 President’s Award
Chatham County (North Carolina) Board of Health member Dr. Rachel Stevens, EdD, RN, has been recognized for her exemplary support to public health and to the National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH). At the 18th Annual NALBOH Conference in Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Stevens was honored with the President’s Award for sharing her passion, commitment, and expertise in advancing public health and NALBOH.

 

Stevens, a resident of Chapel Hill, was recognized for her service as a local board of health member, past member of the NALBOH Board of Directors, NALBOH committee member, public health researcher, expert advisor, consultant, educator, and mentor. Additionally, her dedication as a knowledgeable and passionate public health leader and servant made her uniquely qualified for this honor.
