Food safety must be a high priority in every community due to the potentially devastating impact of food-borne illnesses. Local board members have a significant impact on the success of food safety programs within a community. With NALBOH’s assistance, board members have the ability to strengthen food safety programs by knowing why they are important, learning what makes a comprehensive and effective program, and fulfilling the board’s obligations to the program.

In the News

 

A total of 139 people have been sickened as a result of eating listeria-contaminated cantaloupe.

 

The listeria outbreak in cantaloupe was halted in record time.

 

The CDC has released its 2011 Estimates of Foodborne Illness, which estimates that 1 out of 6 Americans (or 48 million people) gets sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die from foodborne diseases.

 

President Obama signs food safety regulations into law.

Did You Know...

 

The Network for Public Health Law has released resources about raw milk legislation. These resources address the risks of consuming raw milk and summarize current state legislation on the sales of raw milk.

 

The June 2011 CDC Vital Signs focused on foodborne illness.

 

FDA released the updated 2009 Food Code. The Food Code, which is updated every four years, serves as a model code and reference document for regulating the retail and food service segments of the food industry. The new updated code includes new recommendations on time and temperature control for leafy greens and undercooked protein on children’s menus.

FDA releases draft guidances for handling certain produce
The FDA published three draft guidances designed to help people across the supply chain minimize or eliminate microbial contamination in tomatoes, leafy greens, and melons. Click to access the guidances.

 

 

Website Will Serve as Hub for Food Safety Information
The White House Food Safety Working Group, led by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, has launched a website that will provide information about food safety, document the working group’s progress, and provide a place to share ideas about strengthening the food safety system.  Click to view the website.
