NALBOH History

As a membership organization, NALBOH’s main focus and primary type of membership group is the board of health, representing over 90% of NALBOH’s current members. NALBOH considers one board of health as one member of our organization. Since its inception in 1992 when 38 boards of health became inaugural members, NALBOH has experienced consistent and steady growth in the number of members joining (220 in 1997, 627 in 2000, 718 in 2004, and 840 total memberships in 2007). Because each board represents multiple individuals, NALBOH's influence extends to thousands of board members across the country. NALBOH is committed to increasing the number of member boards, but more importantly is committed to increasing its ability to strengthen all boards of health through education, training, and technical assistance initiatives.

In addition to directly serving member boards of health, NALBOH has been committed to supporting State Associations of Local Boards of Health (SALBOHs) and has helped develop new SALBOHs. Six state associations (GA, IL, MA, NC, OH, & UT) were identified. They came together in 1991 to form NALBOH. Since then, the number of SALBOHs has increased to 13.

Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky,

Massachussetts, Michigan, Missouri,

North Carolina, Nebraska,

Ohio, Utah, and Wisconsin

NALBOH continues to support development of new SALBOHs, providing for greater resources at the state level that serve and strengthen local boards of health.

If you are a board of health member and are interested in forming a State Association, please contact NALBOH for more information.
