  • Understand the characteristics of narrative that make it the most powerful form of human communication.
  • Learn the structure and qualities that distinguish a compelling story from an ordinary sequence of events and learn how to apply these qualities to public health achievements.

The Ned E. Baker Lecture Series
This  annual  lecture, named in honor of NALBOH co-founder and first President Ned E. Baker, highlights and celebrates  the important role boards of health play in improving the health of communities across the nation. NALBOH is proud to be  a partner in this series, which is also sponsored by the College of Health and Human Services at Bowling Green State University, the Cove Charitable Trust of Boston, and the Wood County (OH) Hospital Foundation.  The series  is available by webcast to more than 3,000 local boards of health throughout the nation. These annual public health lectures provide local boards of health with an opportunity to celebrate National Public Health Week locally and link with other boards throughout the country.

Ned Baker served for 12 years on the Wood County, Ohio, Board of Health, including two terms as its President. During 1991-92, Ned served as Chairman of the committee which founded NALBOH. Later, he was elected as NALBOH's first President. In 1995, he was appointed Executive Director and served in this position until his retirement in 1998. He currently serves on NALBOH's Emeritus Committee, SALBOH Committee, Membership Committee, and Education & Training Committee.

Kavanaugh, PhD, MPH, RD, and Margo Wootan, DSc discussed food safety efforts, menu labeling, import food security, food marketing and the impact of advertising and labeling on obesity.

A panel consisting of Lieutenant General Russel L. Honoré (Ret.), Stephanie Bailey, MD, MS, and J. Nick Baird, MD spoke on "Building a Healthier America" on April 2, 2009. They focused on our health system at the federal, state, and local levels. Also discussed was the appropriate prioritizing of preventative measures, community health initiatives, and preparedness efforts. A panel of experts from the field shared their insights and lessons learned in an effort to encourage a uniform approach to moving from health care to health.
