Jan Allen

Janice (Attala) Allen is currently a member of the St. Clair County Board of Health and has been a member since 1986, serving as President from 1996 - 1998. She recently completed her term as President of the Illinois Association of Local Boards of Health and is an active member of NALBOH. Additionally, Dr. Allen has extensive field and academic expertise in public health nursing practice, domestic violence prevention and intervention, and is a Violence Prevention Consultant to the Illinois Department of Human Services. She has served in various academic roles as a nursing professor and is currently an Instructor at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in Public Health Nursing.

Dr. Allen earned a PhD in Health Education in 1990 from Southern Illinois University. She has authored 15 publications in the fields of health care and domestic violence as well as presented more than 30 academic papers (both refereed and invited) to audiences in the United States and in Singapore, Malaysia, and Copenhagen, Denmark. Dr. Allen’s honors and awards include the Kimmel Award for Healthcare and Community Leadership from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville; Outstanding Faculty Award from Alumni Association of the University of Missouri, St. Louis; and the Carl N. Scheneman Award for Teen Violence Prevention Program from the University of Missouri System.

As a professional nurse and community leader, Dr. Allen has been a strong advocate for the advancement of public health nursing practice through her professional roles as well as through voluntary community service in numerous community organizations.
