Board of Directors - 2012

John Rodwick, PhD
State Affiliate Director
A professor emeritus of business administration, former university dean and college vice president, John is the founding director of the Siloam Counseling and Renewal Center where he served as president and CEO for nearly 15 years. The Center was the first therapeutic facility in Colorado Springs to offer comprehensive mental health services from a Christian worldview. A licensed psychologist with specialties in developmental, counseling and organizational psychology, he also taught doctoral students courses in social, organizational and consulting psychology as an executive faculty member for the Colorado School for Professional Psychology (now University of the Rockies). Using these specialties he serves as an executive coach for the Center for Creative Leadership where since 1989 he works with top-level managers from national and international corporations. Considering his interest in business and psychology, he has traveled extensively in Asian and Pacific Rim nations (Nepal, Japan, China and Thailand,), Europe (France, Spain and Switzerland) and Central American. Based on these ventures, he produced two PowerPoint web publications on international business communications for use in college/university classrooms.
In addition, he formerly served on various boards: Association of Retarded Citizens (ARC) of the Pikes Peak Region; the Psychological Society of the Pikes Peak Region (PSPPR); and the Saybrook Institute (formerly the Humanistic Psychology Institute) where he provided leadership to these groups as board chair/president. In 2002, the PSPPR honored him with its Cornelia Sabin Award for his contributions to the Society during a period of considerable organizational turmoil.
John currently serves as president of the Mesa County Board of Health; president of the Colorado Association of Local Boards of Health; and State Affiliate Director and Board Member for the National Association for Local Boards of Health. In addition, he is a Congressional Liaison for Colorado District 4 and teaches Master Swim classes at the Fruita Community Center natatorium.
John earned his Ph.D. with dual majors in management and psychology from the University of Northern Colorado (1966), a MS in management from SUNY-Albany (1964), and a BS in English/Education from SUNY-New Paltz (1962). As an undergraduate in 1960, he was introduced to the Third Force or humanistic-existential thrust in psychology through Arthur Coombs' text titled Individual Behavior: A Perceptual Approach to Behavior (1949). Consequently, he was trained as a Rogerian therapist and became actively involved in the 60's and 70's promoting the humanistic cause. In the mid-70's, John was elected to the Board of Directors for the Association for Humanistic Psychology, was appointed Board chair for the Humanistic Psychology Institute (now the Saybrook Institute)--then the largest psychology doctoral degree granting program in the U.S., and was the founding member of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of AHP. In these capacities, he worked closely with Rolo May, Sydney Jourard, Clark Moustakas, Gregory Bateson, Stanley Krippner and numerous other humanistic luminaries.
His special interests lie in being a sports’ enthusiast, especially enjoying road/mountain biking, swimming, fitness training, and hiking. Several years ago, he spent four weeks trekking 250 miles in the Everest region, and later participated both in the National Senior Masters Swimming competition, the National Senior Olympics and the Huntsman Senior Games having medaled in two Colorado-qualifying road-cycling and swimming events.
John is married to a former university professor of reading/special education and Christian school principal; they have four children. He is currently writing a book for clinicians and the general public titled The Mystery and Power of Redemptive Suffering.
