Dr. Schneider, a 70-year-old retired optometrist, is employed as a consultant to the Nebraska Optometric Association regarding insurance and related technical issues. He writes a monthly newsletter for that association, maintains a web page, responds to member’s queries on a daily basis, and speaks regularly at optometric functions regarding insurance claims, correct medical records documentation, and quality of care.
Dr. Schneider was appointed to the Lincoln-Lancaster County Board of Health in April 2000. He served as President of the Board from January 2001 through January 2005. As president, he led the Board in addressing a number of public health issues and represented the Board before the City Council and County Commissioners on multiple occasions. Public health issues addressed during his tenure as President included updating food regulations, addressing environmental issues, implementing tighter animal control ordinances, creating the Department’s strategic plan, implementing a new body-art ordinance, and passage of a 100% smoke-free workplace ordinance. During his tenure as President of the Board of Health he received Lincoln-Lancaster County’s Volunteer of the Month Award. He is past co-chair of a Board of Health and Lincoln Planning Commission joint committee on land use planning for Lincoln-Lancaster County.
In 2004 he began working with the Public Health Association of Nebraska (PHAN) in the training of new board of health members throughout the state, speaking at various public health meetings and videoconferences. He served on the PHAN Board of Directors 2007-2010; he currently serves PHAN as a alternate liaison to APHA. He is on the advisory board of Nebraska’s State Association of Local Boards of Health, a section of PHAN.
He received the National Association of Local Boards of Health Regional Director’s Award in 2002. He has twice provided educational presentations at the NALBOH Annual Conference, once regarding smoke-free workplace environments, and once on land-use planning. He was elected to the NALBOH Board of Directors in 2006, when he served as co-chair of the NALBOH committee addressing the creation and support of State Associations of Local Boards of Health. In April of 2008 Dr. Schneider received the Lincoln-Lancaster County Department of Health Public Health Leadership Award. In September of 2008 he received the Public Health Leadership Award from the Public Health Association of Nebraska.
