Robert Wheeler
Mid Atlantic Regional Director
Robert W. Wheeler is an environmental engineer with more than 40 years of experience as an engineer and industrial hygienist. He is currently serving on the Monongahela (WV) County Board of Health and is in year 2 of a 5-year appointment. For the last 20 years, he has been a private environmental health consultant, of which for the last 16 he has been the President and CEO of Industrial Environmental Consultants. Prior to consulting, Robert served both in the U.S. Army and U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) as an environmental engineer and industrial hygienist and retired from active uniform service duty after 22 years. His major research area while in the USPHS related to respiratory disease research and exposure to diesel engine emissions.
Bob earned a masters degree in public health from the Harvard School of Public Health, and masters and bachelors degree in civil engineering from West Virginia University. He has been elected as a Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association and an Honorary Member of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. He is a registered professional engineer in environmental and safety engineering.
Robert’s public health related work included working as the U.S. Army’s Chief Environmental Engineer in Japan; a 3-month tour as an environmental engineer with the World Health Organization (WHO) in the western regional office in Manila, Philippines; and working with the Coal Miners X-Ray Surveillance Program of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), serving as the chief NIOSH consultant to the Mine Safety and Health Administration on basic sanitation at mining sites. Robert continues to work as an industrial hygiene engineering consultant.
