Swine Flu Update
The H1N1 Virus is a highly contagious strain of influenza. Because this is a new virus, most people will not have immunity to it so illness may be more severe and widespread as a result. The CDC's updated swine flu information can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/swine/investigation.htm
Boards of health must be working with health agency administration on ensuring that the health agency staff understands and are comfortable with their roles in the community’s pandemic flu plans. There must be ongoing education and communication with local health practitioners. Click for a complete list of CDC clinical and public health guidance for the H1N1 Virus.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised the pandemic alert level to Phase 6, the pandemic phase. The pandemic phase has been declared because transmission of the H1N1 virus is widespread in at least two regions of the world. The pandemic phase refers to the geographic spread of the virus and does not address the severity of the illness.
CDC continues to take aggressive action to respond to an expanding outbreak caused by novel H1N1 flu.
CDC’s response goals are to:
- Reduce transmission and illness severity.
- Provide information to help health care providers, public health officials, and the public to address the challenges posed by this emergency.
CDC also has completed deployment of 25% of the supplies in the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) to all states in the continental United States. These supplies and medicines will help states and U.S. territories respond to the outbreak. In addition, the federal government and manufacturers have begun the process of developing a vaccine against the novel H1N1 flu virus.
