Governance Research Published by Partners

The work supported by USAID to advance leadership, management and governance as means to enhance stronger health systems and greater health gain is contributing in many small and large ways for low and high income countries. We hope you will find this article of interest regarding a study with the World Federation of Public Health Associations.
The article “A survey of the governance capacity of national public health associations to enhance population health” is published by BioMed Central (link). Brief Filed in Support of NYC Restaurant Sodium Warnings
On February 24, 2016, Justice Eileen Rakower of the Supreme Court of the State of New York (the trial-level court) rejected the National Restaurant Association’s legal challenge to New York City’s groundbreaking health warning law requiring chain restaurants to identify menu items containing more than an entire day’s worth of salt.
Ruling from the bench, Justice Rakower summarily dismissed arguments that the law infringes on restaurants’ First Amendment rights. On the contrary, Justice Rakower ruled, the new law enhances consumer’s autonomy and decision-making, because “information is power.” Health warnings such as those involved in the case are specifically allowed by federal food labeling laws, the Justice also ruled.
The National Association of Local Boards of Health signed onto the amicus brief to support the New York City Board of Health. To view more details about the NYC case, please click here.
