April Showers bring May Flowers
Your NALBOH Board of Directors have returned home after spending 3 days in Omaha, Nebraska. I invited them to have our April board meeting and 2015 Strategic Planning on the campus of UNMC (University Nebraska Medical Center) College of Public Health. Monday, after the short board meeting, we started our strategic planning work with Dr. Brandon Grimm as our facilitator. My friend Brandon is the Director of the Office of Public Health Practice and Instructor in the Department of Health Promotion, Social and Behavioral Health, at the College of Public Health. We had a full day of planning and discussing the focus for the future of NALBOH.
The Dean of the college, Dr. Ali Kahn, welcomed us to the campus as we gathered with 9 invited Nebraska public health leaders to share information, stories and lunch. The focus was on NALBOH and the importance of NALBOH and our mission. We were all engaged in discussions as the invited guests shared very supportive comments and suggestions with us.
The Tuesday work included putting the focused ideas into action steps. We worked enthusiastically and diligently. In the near future we will share the outcomes of the Monday and Tuesday discussions and decisions for action. More information to come. Stay tuned.
Partners and relationships we form as local board members is also important on the national level. Eric Ostermann, Bob Lutz and I had a great conversation with ASTHO Senior Deputy of Performance Management and Quality Control, Donna Marshall. Bob and she had a conversation at a PHAB board meeting, hence the connection. We discussed the future of ASTHO/NALBOH collaboration and information sharing. We, as the local board of health members, need to know and introduce ourselves to the State Health Officer. This is a relationship that could be beneficial, and needs to happen.
Please continue to check the website for more information about the happenings of NALBOH members. We want your news articles. Check to see if your article on the happenings in your health department and your board of health, has made it to our E-news. You need to share your stories, let us know what is happening and challenging or just to boast good news from your board/department. What did you do for National Public Health Week? Let us know, send pictures.
Remember to register for the conference and to join the next webinar on April 22 and the last, but not least of the series, on May 27.
Help us increase the memberships. Get your neighboring boards of health to join NALBOH or renew. My personal goal is to have 2000 board members before the Annual Conference and we are at approximately 1600. We can do this!
