Coverage Continues: Study Finds Association Between Frequent Recreational Cannabis Use, Periodontal Disease.

Medical Daily (5/26, Dovey) reported that research out of the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine suggests frequent, recreational cannabis use may increase the risk of gum disease. The article reported that “the study determined that frequent recreational use of the cannabis plant can double users’ risk of periodontal disease.” Lead author Jaffer Shariff, DDS, MPH, said in a statement, “It is well known that frequent tobacco use can increase the risk of periodontal disease, but it was surprising to see that recreational cannabis users may also be at risk.”
