Greetings BOH members!

I hope this communique finds you emerging from the winter doldrums and energized for a great spring in Indiana. I was walking my dogs in the woods of southeastern IN and found some green sprouts blooming on some of the bushes…..a sure sign of warmer temps in the near future.

Recently ISDH rolled out its Chronic Disease Plan and I was fortunate to be in attendance.  The Plan is detailed on its new website www.inchronicdisease.org. Please avail yourselves of what this program can do for you in your county and the resources offered. There are four Domains: Epidemiology and Data Surveillance, Environmental Approaches, Healthcare System Interventions and Community Programs and Clinical Services. Thanks to Vicki Simpson, PhD, RN of Purdue University for chairing this important endeavor. It was mentioned at the Rollout that there  are policy opportunities in the Chronic Disease Plan which lead me to think about Boards of Health and our important function of Policy Development. I will look forward to engaging with ISDH and the Chronic Disease Plan in efforts to  bring health improvement ideas to local communities.

I  feel like I should say something about the current legislative session and any impact that it will have on public health. But I find it difficult, to say the least, to keep abreast of the statehouse happenings from 90 miles away. And when I learned that the tobacco 21 and cigarette tax legislation introduced was dead, I, truthfully, lost interest. Take heart, BOH members. There may be a ray of hope in what the Alliance for a Healthier Indiana organization has in store for 2018. What do you think about a Public Health Road Show?

The Alliance has planned several Town Halls around the state. The project is called “State of Our Health Road Show”. There are 17 sites around our great state to be visited this year between April and October. Take a look at www.healthierindiana.org to see when the Road Show will come to your community or near you. Then volunteer to be part of the celebration. I registered to be part of the Madison event on October 11. That’s the one nearest me. I’m sure they will  need local help to pull this event off, so don’t be shy and reach out to the Alliance at info@HealthierIndiana.org.

I hope to see some of you at the ISDH Spring Symposium in Indy on March 21 or IPHA’s Public Health Conference on the Bloomington campus on April 17.

Thanks to those of you who have renewed your membership for 2018. And for those of you who are a little late, fear not, there is still time. You can contact me at hlrobin@aol.com or the NALBOH office on the website, nalboh.org. Speaking of the website, I recommend you visit the Indiana page on the site often to catch up on happenings, webinars, etc.

Registration is NOW OPEN for the NALBOH Annual Conference in Raleigh, NC, August 8-10. I look forward to increasing our InALBOH representation at the National level - it is a great conference that I have been fortunate to attend every year for a few years!

Many well wishes to all of you as you work to make your counties great places to live, work, play and learn.
