Purpose of the NPHPSP

The NPHPSP is a collaboration of public health agencies and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) who have partnered to develop clear, measurable performance standards for state and local public health systems to help ensure the delivery of the Essential Public Health Services. The goals of the program are to:

  • Create tools for public health practitioners to use in continuous quality improvement processes;
  • Strengthen state and local public health systems by providing mechanisms for demonstrating accountability to constituencies; and
  • Enhance decision-making by strengthening the science base for effective public health practice.

Preview of New “Version 2” Instruments

CDC and the NPHPSP partners are pleased to share the updated NPHPSP instruments that have been developed through a collaborative and peer-driven process. We are not able to accept data for these instruments until OMB approval is granted, however we encourage sites to begin reviewing them for planning purposes.

To learn about the key changes that occurred in the three instruments and how the “Version 2” instruments differ from the currently available tools, please click here.

Updated Technical Assistance Documents
We are also updating and revising the technical assistance and support documents so that they best meet the needs of the updated NPHPSP instruments. These include the User Guide, Facilitator’s Guide, Frequently Asked Questions, score sheets, and other helpful documents. Current versions will remain on the NPHPSP website and we will upload the updated documents as they are finalized. If you have any questions about supporting documents, please contact the NPHPSP staff at CDC (phpsp@cdc.gov).
