Advocacy Groups

Action on Smoking and Health (ASH)
Anti-smoking organization that focuses on legal and other actions to fight smoking and to protect the rights of nonsmokers. The site contains a wealth of information regarding tobacco, including: health, legislation, current news, and quitting guidelines.

The Advocacy Institute
"The Advocacy Institute is a US based global organization dedicated to strengthening the capacity of political, social and economic justice advocates to influence and change public policy." The Institute has a Tobacco Control Project, which provides "strategic guidance and counseling to tobacco control advocates." The site has links to their various issues, including public health.

AIDS Action
AIDS Action "is a network of 3,200 national AIDS service organizations and is the only organization solely dedicated to responsible federal policy for improved HIV/AIDS care and services, vigorous medical research and effective prevention." The site provides information on policy, Ryan White project, action, the press, a discussion link and links to a virtual vaccine. The site is also searchable.

AIDS Law Project (ALP)
The ALP is at Wits University Center (South Africa) for Applied Legal Studies. It is an organization that specializes in helping people with HIV/AIDS deal with these problems. They research many of the difficult social, legal, and human rights issues around AIDS. They use their research to develop law, policies, and "best practice" recommendations on questions such as AIDS and employment, AIDS and pregnancy, AIDS and development, and AIDS and women.

Alliance for Healthy Homes
The Alliance for Healthy Homes works to protect children from lead and other home environmental health hazards. A national, non-profit public interest organization, the Alliance advocates for policy solutions and builds the capacity of communities to prevent in-home hazards from harming the health of children, their families, and all residents.

American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
AAP is committed to "the attainment of optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults." The site contains educational campaign links under the Advocacy menu, research, publications, policy statements, grant opportunities, and other programs.

Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights (ANR)
ANR is a lobbying organization "dedicated to nonsmokers' rights." The ANR site contains information on the tobacco industry, campaigns to reduce/eliminate smoking, advocacy, and secondhand smoke facts.

Child Welfare League of America (CWLA)
The CWLA's web site offers information on their programs that supports their mission "to develop and promote policies and programs to protect America's children and strengthen America's families." The site has links to advocacy, publications, conferences & training, and consultation services. In addition, there is information on each of their programs, including: adolescent pregnancy prevention and parenting, health care, HIV/AIDS, the Managed Care Institute, housing and homelessness, chemical dependency, positive youth development, and family-centered practice.

Community Voices
Community Voices is an initiative from W.K. Kellogg Foundation that contains information on national health policy and efforts of local communities to improve health care access and quality. There are reports on minority health initiatives, oral health, youth violence, mental health and issues related to health care access. The site features monthly articles by prominent scholars and politicians as well as serves as a gateway to other important health and nonprofit web sites.

Environmental Working Group (EWG)
EWG is a not-for-profit environmental research organization dedicated to improving public health and protecting the environment by reducing pollution in air, water and food. The goal of EWG’s research is to turn raw data into usable information. The site contains links to reports and projects by EWG.

Handgun Control
Handgun Control is the "driving force for significant gun safety legislation." The site contains information on guns in the news, gun industry lawsuits, voting records of congressional members, facts on gun violence, state scorecards on gun issues and other related web links.

Health Care Without Harm
This is a campaign of more than 250 organizations whose mission it is to "transform health care so that it is no longer a source of environmental harm by eliminating pollution in health care practices without compromising safety or care."

Health Consumer Alliance
"HCA is a partnership of consumer assistance programs operated by community-based legal services organizations. Our common mission is to help low-income people obtain essential health care." This site has consumer resources, advocate resources, publication, information on children & youths, managed care, disability, and pages in numerous foreign languages (e.g. Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Spanish). Although this program focuses on California, it may provide a useful tool for other states.

Immunization Action Coalition
The Immunization Action Coalition site contains information about child, adolescent and adult immunizations. "The Coalition promotes physician, community and family awareness of, and responsibility for, appropriate immunization of all children and adults against all vaccine-preventable diseases." The site also offers the publication Vaccines: What Every Parent Should Know (note: requires Adobe® Acrobat Reader).

Injury Free Coalition for Kids
Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Coalition's site is a resource for concerns regarding injury prevention, including programs on bicycle safety, passenger safety, safety belts and safety street sites.

National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC)
NBCC is a grassroots advocacy organization with the mission to eradicate breast cancer through action and advocacy. Their site contains current news, calendar of events, information on their annual conference, education and training, and positions, facts and analyses.

National Council of Women's Organizations
The NCWO "is a bipartisan network of more than one hundred women's organization, which together represent more than 6 million members. Our member organizations include grassroots, research, service, media and legal advocacy groups. We work together to advocate change on many issues of importance to women, including equal employment opportunity, economic equity, media equality, education, job training, women's health and reproductive health, as well as the specific concerns of mid-life and older women, girls and young women, women of color, business and professional women, homemakers and retired women." They focus on many issues, including women's health. Their web site contains links to the issues and information about their projects and organization.

National Health Law Program (NHeLP)
"The National Health Law Program (NHeLP) is a national public interest law firm that seeks to improve health care for America's working and unemployed poor, minorities, the elderly and people with disabilities. There are links to advocacy on their site.

Oklahoma City National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism (MIPT)
MIPT is dedicated to preventing and reducing terrorism and mitigating its effect. One special obligation is to first responders - police officers, fire fighters, emergency medical technicians, etc. The site provides links to research, library resources, first responder resources, links to organization and information regarding terrorism.

Positive Directions
Positive Directions is a grassroots, nonprofit human services organization whose mission is to improve the quality and longevity of life for people living with HIV and AIDS. They provide information, support, counseling, advocacy and access to community resources for all HIV-positive people. They also monitor advances in medical treatment and seek to effect changes in policy. Their site contains links to their programs, upcoming events, a newsletter and volunteering/donating opportunities.

SmokeFree Educational Services, Inc.
The SmokeFree web site"facilitates letter writing between smokefree advocates and key decision makers." Their site offers links to letters, people, smokefree events, other web pages, a discussion group and available smokefree documents.

Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT)
The Society's mission is "to stimulate the generation of new knowledge concerning nicotine in all its manifestations -- from molecular to societal." They offer a newsletter, message board, abstracts to their journal (Nicotine & Tobacco Research), a training directory, publications, event information and other resources. The information is also available in German and French.

The Trust for America's Health (TFAH)
TFAH is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect the health and safety of all communities, especially those most at risk of environmental and other public health threats. Their goal is to strengthen the nation's public health system through science-based research, community partnerships, education, and advocacy. The site contains links to state tracking factsheets, issues & campaigns, research & resources, and a community health forum.
