Alliance
for Healthy Homes
The Alliance for Healthy Homes works to protect children from lead and other
home environmental health hazards. A national, non-profit public interest organization,
the Alliance advocates for policy solutions and builds the capacity of communities
to prevent in-home hazards from harming the health of children, their families,
and all residents.

Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
AAP is committed to "the attainment of optimal physical, mental, and social
health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults."

The American Heart Association is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The ASHA is an organization of school professionals who are "committed
to safeguarding the health of school-aged children." From their web page,
one can gather information on their publications, conferences, membership information,
and resolutions on specific school health issues.

AOEC is a "a nonprofit organization, is committed to improving the practice
of occupational and environmental health through information sharing and collaborative
research." Their site contains education resources, epidemiology tools,
pediatric environmental health units, and links to their partners.
BADvertising
Institute
The BADvertising Institute's mission is "to immunize kids against tobacco,
inspire smokers to quit, and equip advocates and educators with the tools for
doing the same." They do this by powerful counter-advertising messages
in the form of exhibits, posters and billboards, slide presentations, workshops
and their web site.
Bright
Futures
Bright Futures is dedicated to the principle that every child deserves to be
healthy and that optimal health involves a trusting relationship between the
health professional, the child, the family, and the community as partners in
health practice. Special topic areas include: nutrition, oral health, mental
health, physical activity and families. They also have resources in Spanish.
Campaign
for Tobacco-Free Kids
The campaign fights to "free America's youth from tobacco and to
create a healthier environment." The site contains information on research,
advertising campaigns, recent Supreme Court Decisions, programs for action and
special reports.

Network of professionals working to prevent child abuse. The web site offers
links to prevention, statistics, family resources, and the latest news in abuse

"Child Trends is a nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization dedicated
to studying children, youth, and families through research, data collection,
and data analyses." Their current projects include: Effects of Welfare

Indicators of Children's Well-being, Data and Measurement, Positive Development;

The CWLA's web site offers information on their programs that supports their
mission "to develop and promote policies and programs to protect America's
children and strengthen America's families." The site has links to advocacy,
publications, conferences & training, and consultation services. In addition,
there is information on each of their programs, including: adolescent pregnancy
prevention and parenting, health care, HIV/AIDS, the Managed Care Institute,
housing and homelessness, chemical dependency, positive youth development, and
family-centered practice.

Children NOW works "to improve the well being of children by utilizing
research and mass communication to make the well being of children a top priority
across the nation." Their site provides information about their programs
on: media advocacy, the Internet, talking with kids about tough issues campaign,
children and the media, health initiative, and working families program.

Defense Fund (CDF)
CDF's mission is "to leave no child behind and to ensure every child a
Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start, and a Moral Start in
life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and
communities." Their site contains information on their programs (including
The Black Community Crusade for Children, Head Start, Healthy Start, etc.),
publications and reports, news, issues, and links to other web pages.
Children's Dental Health Project The Children's Dental Health Project advances policies that improve children's access to oral health. They forge research-driven policies and innovative solutions by engaging a broad base of partners committed to children and oral health.

Environmental Health Network (CEHN)
CEHN's web site provides information on the Network, the issues of children's
environmental health, and links to sources of information and resources in the
field. They also include a list of Organizations
Active in the Field of Children's Environmental Health. This is a very useful
site for finding additional information on children's environmental health.

Safety Network (CSN)
The Children's Safety Network National Injury and Violence Prevention Resource
Center "provides resources and technical assistance to maternal and child
health agencies and other organization seeking to reduce unintentional injuries
and violence to children and adolescents." The site contains publications
and resources on their mission.
The
Children's Partnership
The Children's Partnership is a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization
whose mission is to inform leaders and the public about the needs of America's
70 million children, and to engage them in ways that benefit children. The Partnership
undertakes research and policy analysis, publishes reports and multimedia materials,
and forges new alliances among parents, policy makers and the private sector
to achieve tangible gains for children. The Partnership focuses particular attention
on identifying new trends and emerging issues that will affect large numbers
of America's children and on providing early analysis and strategies for action."

Product Safety Commission
The CPSC is an independent Federal regulatory agency that "help keep American
families safe by reducing the risk of injury or death from consumer products."
There is information for kids, an opportunity to report unsafe products, information
on recalls, businesses, a library and information for consumers in English and
in Spanish.
Covering
Kids & Families
To address the need to reduce the number of uninsured children and adults who
are eligible for public health care coverage programs but not enrolled, The
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation launched Covering Kids & Families (CKF),
a four-year, $55 million dollar initiative to increase the number of children
and families who benefit from existing health care coverage programs. Covering
Kids & Families operates through statewide projects in 45 states and the
District of Columbia and more than 140 local community projects. In addition,
4 states have CKF liaison grants that provide opportunities to participate in
the national CKF initiative.
The
CKF coalitions focus on the following three strategies to reduce the number
of uninsured children and adults who are eligible but not enrolled in Medicaid
and SCHIP: conduct and coordinate outreach programs; simplify enrollment and
renewal processes; and
coordinate existing health care coverage programs.

of high-quality, affordable health and long-term care for all Americans."
Web site contains information on Medicare, Medicaid, children's health, uninsured

It is an outstanding source of resources on health issues.

Consumer Alliance
"HCA is a partnership of consumer assistance programs operated by community-based
legal services organizations. Our common mission is to help low-income people
obtain essential health care." This site has consumer resources, advocate
resources, publication, information on children & youths, managed care,
disability, and pages in numerous foreign languages (e.g. Chinese, Farsi, Korean,
Spanish). Although this program focuses on California, it may provide a useful
tool for other states.

Poll Search
Health Poll Search is a searchable archive of public opinion questions on health
issues that allows users to know what Americans think about health issues, as
well as what Americans have thought about health issues over time. Health Poll
Search is the result of a partnership between the Kaiser Family Foundation and
The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research at the University of Connecticut.
The Roper Center houses an archive of more than 350,000 public opinion questions
dating back to 1935. The
Health Poll Search archive covers 29 topics and more than 300 subtopics, and holds
more than 60,000 questions on health issues from health care surveys that have
included questions on health. These questions provide information on public perceptions
of HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, health policy and health reform, Medicare and
Medicaid, women's health, the uninsured, minority health, and children's health.
Response percentages and source information are provided for all questions.

Policy Coach
Health Policy Coach is part of the California Center for Health Improvement
(CCHI). The Coach "is a resource for people seeking to improve community
health through prevention-focused policy change. The site provides peer-reviewed,
searchable health policies and "how-to" information and coaching resources
of individuals and groups interested in effecting policy change in their communities."
Policies include such topics as child care, tobacco, firearms, environmental
toxins, illegal drugs, alcohol, and infectious disease.

United States 2000
This CDC report contains an adolescent health chartbook documenting health
risks faced by children and adolescent between 10 and 19. The report has sections
on population characteristics, health status, reproductive health, risk behaviors,

Healthy
Kids, Healthy Schools
The Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools Site explores innovative strategies that
schools, nonprofit organizations and local health agencies are using to enroll
children in subsidized health insurance programs and provides information on
policy issues related to children's health insurance.
Healthy Start Initiative
This Initiative was established to plan community-driven strategies attacking
the causes of infant mortality and low birth weight, especially among high-risk
populations. This site, from the National
Health Start Association, site contains information about the program, goals
and objectives of the organization, facts on infant and maternal mortality,
and consumer information.
The
Honeysuckle Foundation for Children with Cancer
The Honeysuckle Foundation for Children with Cancer is an organization dedicated
to improving the quality-of-life for children diagnosed with cancer. It is the
goal of the Foundation to: assist these children and their families by providing
direct financial support for expenses related to cancer treatment; provide resources
as incentives for children undergoing chemotherapy and various medical procedures;
and fund educational programs for school personnel and students to increase
understanding of the disease and encourage social support for the patient both
during treatment and post-treatment.

Action Coalition
The Immunization Action Coalition site contains information about child,
adolescent and adult immunizations. "The Coalition promotes physician,
community and family awareness of, and responsibility for, appropriate immunization
of all children and adults against all vaccine-preventable diseases." The

Injury
Free Coalition for Kids
Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation,
the Coalition's site is a resource for concerns regarding injury prevention,
including programs on bicycle safety, passenger safety, safety belts and safety
street sites.
Kids
in Danger
Kids in Danger is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raise awareness and
put the issue of children's product safety on the national agenda. The site
contains information about product information, links to other organizations
and an e-mail notification list.
Lead
Screening for Children in the Medicaid Program: A Toolkit
This resource is "intended for families, health care providers, managed
care plans, program administrators, and health educators." The toolkit
includes the following materials: fact sheets about lead and lead poisoning;
federal Medicaid lead screening requirement; CDC recommendations on improving
screening and follow-up rates for lead poisoned children and strategies for
enhancement of routine and targeted screening of high-risk children. The materials

March
of Dimes (MoD)
The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies
by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. Contains information on Mod
programs of research, community services, education and advocacy, including
materials about the effects of smoking on pregnancy. There are also resources
in Spanish.

Assembly on School-Based Health Care (NASBHC)
NASBHC "is dedicated to promoting accessible, quality school-based primary
health and mental health care for children and youth through interdisciplinary
and collaborative efforts. The National Assembly supports the institutionalization
of school-based health care nationwide as an essential strategy for improving
the lives of children and optimizing their opportunities for success in school
and society. NASBHC supports its individual and organizational members by providing
community, state, and national advocacy, information and knowledge exchange,
networking opportunities, and technical assistance."

Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP)
The NCCP's mission is to "identify and promote strategies that reduce the
number of young children living in poverty in the United States, and to improve
the life chances of the million of children under age six who are growing up
poor." The site contains media resources, child poverty facts, state &
local information, research on childcare and early education, family support,
welfare reform and links to publications.

Center for Education in Maternal and Child Health (NCEMCH)
A research center of
Georgetown University's Public Policy Institute, NCEMCH "provides national
leadership to the maternal and child health community in three key areas--program
development, policy analysis and education, and state-of-the-art knowledge--to
improve the health and well-being of the nation's children and families."
The NCEMCH site offers information on programs & policies, data & research
tools and publications. They also have links to the National
Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center.

Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA)
CASA's mission is to: inform
Americans of the economic and social costs of substance abuse and its impact
on their lives; to assess what works in prevention, treatment, and law enforcement;

substance abuse and addiction; to provide those on the front lines with the

Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center
"The purpose of the National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center
is to respond to the needs of states and communities in addressing current and
emerging public oral health issues. The resource center supports and stimulates
health professionals, program administrators, educators, policy makers, and
others with the goal of improving oral health services for infants, children,
adolescents, and their families. The resource center collaborates with federal,
state, and local agencies; national and state organizations and associations;
and foundations, to gather, develop, and share quality and valued information

Safe Kids Campaign
The Campaign's purpose is to prevent unintentional injury, which is
the #1 killer of children. The site contains information on the SAFEKIDS programs,
statistics on the incidence of injury, and a significant number of web links
to specific safety issues, such as fire safety, motor vehicles, playground,
and diversity.
NIDA Goes Back to School
IDA has created the NIDA Goes Back to School (NGBTS) campaign for children, teens, and the adults who influence them, including science/health teachers, curriculum developers, science chairpersons, school nurses/counselors, and youth-health advocates. The campaign is a source for FREE science-based publications and teaching materials for grades K-12. The materials emphasize the consequences of drug abuse on the brain and the body, and aim to increase scientific literacy.

EPA web site on environmental health designed
for children. It contains kid-friendly pages describing the EPA, its project

PeriStats
PeriStats is an interactive perinatal data resource providing maternal, infant
and child health-related data at the state-level and for many indicators at
the county-level. The PeriStats database uses data compiled from the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including the National Center for
Health Statistics (NCHS), the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention
and Health Promotion, and the National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention,
the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Health Resources
Services Administration (HRSA), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration (SAMHSA), the U.S. Census Bureau, the National Governors Association

Prevention Online, National Clearing House for Alcohol and Drug Information
(NCADI)
PREVLINE features information on alcohol and drug with online databases, facts,

kids only. The site is searchable or able to be navigated by topics or pull-down
menus.
Program
for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH)
PATH is committed to improving the health of women and children and to preventing
communicable diseases. The site contains information on their programs, technologies
and resources available to those interested in PATH's goals.
Rainbow
Child International
"A nonprofit organization dedicated to building global and environmental
awareness and respect for cultural diversity, Rainbow Child International works
on programs that that explore world culture and nature through interactive discovery."
The site contains links to these programs, the organization, materials used
in the program, and links to other related information.
Tobacco Free Sports
A collaborative efforts between the DHHS (including the National Cancer Institute
and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), the President's Council
on Physical Fitness and Sports, and the US Women's National Soccer Team, Smoke-Free
Kids and Soccer uses the women's team members to encourage adolescent girls
to "participate in soccer to maintain physical fitness and resist the pressures
to smoke." The site contains information about the program, including banners,
posters and additional links.

Wars
This program, from the American Academy of Family
Practitioners, targets 4th and 5th grade students for the tobacco-free education
program. The site provides information about the program and how to become a
participant in the program.

Trust for America's Health (TFAH)
TFAH is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect the health
and safety of all communities, especially those most at risk of environmental
and other public health threats. Their goal is to strengthen the nation's public
