Environmental Health

Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR)
The mission of the Agency is "to prevent exposure and adverse human health effects and diminished quality of life associated with exposure to hazardous substances from waste sites, unplanned releases, and other sources of pollution present in the environment."

Alliance for Healthy Homes
The Alliance for Healthy Homes works to protect children from lead and other home environmental health hazards. A national, non-profit public interest organization, the Alliance advocates for policy solutions and builds the capacity of communities to prevent in-home hazards from harming the health of children, their families, and all residents.

American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH)
ACGIH is a member-based organization and community of professionals that advances worker health and safety through education and the development and dissemination of scientific and technical knowledge.

American Council on Science and Health (ACSH)
ACSH is a "consumer education consortium concerned with issues related to food, nutrition, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, lifestyle, the environment and health." The issues--alcohol, disease, environmental health, food safety, lifestyle, medical care, nutrition & fitness and tobacco--link to press releases, magazine articles, publications, editorials, and additional offsite links

American Indian Environmental Office (AIEO)
A division of the EPA, the AIEO "coordinates the Agency-wide effort to strengthen public health and environmental protection in Indian Country, with special emphasis on building Tribal capacity to administer their own environmental programs." The site contains information on the programs, as well as resource links to other sites.

American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA)
AIHA promotes, protects, and enhances industrial hygienists and other occupational health, safety and environmental professionals in their efforts to improve the health and well being of workers, the community, and the environment.

Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics (AOEC)
AOEC is a "a nonprofit organization, is committed to improving the practice of occupational and environmental health through information sharing and collaborative research." Their site contains education resources, epidemiology tools, pediatric environmental health units, and links to their partners.

Center for International Earth Science (CIESIN)
CIESIN is a "nonprofit, non-governmental organization that provides information to help scientists, decision-makers and the public better understand their changing world. They specialize in global and regional network development, science data management, decision support, and training, education and technical consultation services." The site contains links to a discussion list, information systems, data resources, interactive applications and CIESIN's programs.

Children's Environmental Health Network (CEHN)
CEHN's web site provides information on the Network, the issues of children's environmental health, and links to sources of information and resources in the field. They also include a list of Organizations Active in the Field of Children's Environmental Health. This is a very useful site for finding additional information on children's environmental health.

Children's Environmental Health Web Site
This site from the Minnesota Department of health was created to "improve access to information about children's environmental health. The site describes the department's programs and activities, including surveillance, school indoor air quality, chemical exposures, asthma, and health education.

Environmental Defense
Environmental Defense is "dedicated to protecting the environmental rights of all people, including future generations. Among these rights are: clean air; clean water; healthy, nourishing food; and a flourishing ecosystem." The site contains a wealth of information on their programs that center on these rights as well as publications, scorecards on environmental issues, and a topical index. There are also Spanish language resources.

Environmental Health Library
Library of environmental issues located at the University of Washington. May provide useful academic source for environmental research.

Environmental Maps (E-Maps)
This service, from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), "is a free Internet service that combines information on HUD’s community development and housing programs with EPA’s environmental data. HUD E-MAPS provides: location, type and performance of HUD-funded activities in every neighborhood across the country; and select EPA information on brownfields, hazardous wastes, air pollution and waste water discharges."

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
The EPA is the US government site for environmental health and protection. The site contains information and links to issues on environmental health

Environmental Research Foundation (ERF)
The ERF's goal is "to provide understandable scientific information about the influence of toxic substances on human health and the environment." The site contains links to an online weekly update, publications, organizations, related sites, a library and a calendar. The site is also available in Spanish.

Environmental Working Group (EWG)
EWG is a not-for-profit environmental research organization dedicated to improving public health and protecting the environment by reducing pollution in air, water and food. The goal of EWG’s research is to turn raw data into usable information. The site contains links to reports and projects by EWG.

Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) Program
The EPP program offers information on over 600 products and services arranged in categories (50) from appliances to vehicles. The database "is a comprehensive resource that includes more than 330 environmental standards and guidelines developed by government agencies and independent groups and is a resource to help government agencies to purchase environmentally preferable products and services."

Gold & Green
The Green & Gold report is an annual report which "finds that states with the highest environmental grades also boast the best economics--debunking the 'jobs vs. the environment' myth." In addition to the report, the Institute for Southern Studies, which conducts the research, offers information and links to indicator reports, trends, maps and individual state reports.

Health Care Without Harm
This is a campaign of more than 250 organizations whose mission it is to "transform health care so that it is no longer a source of environmental harm by eliminating pollution in health care practices without compromising safety or care."

Healthy People 2010 Environmental Health Resource Pages
"This site is part of a national, public-private effort to provide easy access to information useful in the development of environmental health objectives and for other environmental health planning projects. It focuses on the six major topic areas within the Healthy People 2010 Environmental Health Focus Area: Outdoor Air Quality, Water Quality, Toxics and Wastes, Healthy Homes and Healthy Communities, Infrastructure and Surveillance, and Global Environmental Health. "

Health Poll Search
Health Poll Search is a searchable archive of public opinion questions on health issues that allows users to know what Americans think about health issues, as well as what Americans have thought about health issues over time. Health Poll Search is the result of a partnership between the Kaiser Family Foundation and The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research at the University of Connecticut. The Roper Center houses an archive of more than 350,000 public opinion questions dating back to 1935.
The Health Poll Search archive covers 29 topics and more than 300 subtopics, and holds more than 60,000 questions on health issues from health care surveys that have included questions on health. These questions provide information on public perceptions of HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, health policy and health reform, Medicare and Medicaid, women's health, the uninsured, minority health, and children's health. Response percentages and source information are provided for all questions.

Health Policy Coach
Health Policy Coach is part of the California Center for Health Improvement (CCHI). The Coach "is a resource for people seeking to improve community health through prevention-focused policy change. The site provides peer-reviewed, searchable health policies and "how-to" information and coaching resources of individuals and groups interested in effecting policy change in their communities." Policies include such topics as child care, tobacco, firearms, environmental toxins, illegal drugs, alcohol, and infectious disease.

Institute for Global Tobacco Control
The mission for the Institute is "to prevent death and disease from tobacco use around the world through research, education and policy development." Their site contains news & information, ongoing research projects and a chapter on Environmental Tobacco Smoke.

Lead Screening for Children in the Medicaid Program: A Toolkit
This resource is "intended for families, health care providers, managed care plans, program administrators, and health educators." The toolkit includes the following materials: fact sheets about lead and lead poisoning; federal Medicaid lead screening requirement; CDC recommendations on improving screening and follow-up rates for lead poisoned children and strategies for enhancement of routine and targeted screening of high-risk children. The materials are available online or can be ordered by contacting the Alliance to End Childhood Lead Poisoning (AECLP) at 202-543-1147.

National Association of Local Government Environmental Professionals (NALGEP)
NALGEP is a professional organization that brings together "local environmental officials to network and share information on innovative environmental practices, conduct environmental policy projects, promote environmental training and education and communicate the view of local environmental officials on national environmental issues."

National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH)
The NCEH work "to prevent illness, disability, and death from interactions between people and the environment." Their site contains information on their programs, publications, a version for kids, and resources in Spanish with an emphasis on Hispanic issues.

National Environmental Education & Training Foundation (NEETF)
NEETF is a private, non-profit organization that plays a unique role in the environmental education and training field. They develop and support environmental learning programs to meet social goals and "greener," more profitable business. Their mission is to bring about a stronger economic, ecological, and societal future through environmental learning.

National Environmental Health Association (NEHA)
Professional association for persons in environmental occupations or individuals interested in environmental issues, the NEHA site contains links regarding membership, their NEHA's Journal of Environmental Health and the FOOD Environment News Digest. The site also contains information on NEHA's position papers, radon training, publications, continuing education and their annual conference.

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)
The NIEHS' mission is to "reduce the burden of human illness and dysfunction from environmental causes by understanding environmental factors, individual susceptibility and age and how they interrelate to effect human health and human disease."

National Safety Council (NSC)
The NSC's mission is to "education and influence society to adopt safety, health and environmental policies, practices and procedures that prevent and mitigate human suffering and economic losses arising from preventable causes." The site contains links to resources on: public safety; the workplace; the environment; and community home & youth.

National Science Foundation
NSF is "committed to the environment by developing standards, by providing education and by providing third-party conformity assessment services while representing the interest of all stakeholders." The site contains links to online newsletter, NSF publications, information for consumers, standards, and a searchable database of NSF certified products.

National Small Flows Clearinghouse (NSFC)
NSFC is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency to provide "information about innovative, low-cost wastewater treatments for small communities, those with populations less than 10,000. Emphasis is placed on finding practical, alternative solutions for "small flows" wastewater problems. A "small flows" system is one that has one million gallons or less of wastewater flowing through it each day, ranging from septic systems to small sewage treatment plants. NSFC helps homeowners, renters, citizens' groups, local industry leaders, research scientists, educators, local and state government officials, consultants, manufacturers, operators and maintainers, contractors, and related professionals."

National Tribal Environmental Council (NTEC)
NTEC is a "membership organization dedicated to working with and assisting Tribes in the protection and preservation of the reservation environment."

Occupational Health Safety
This online magazine is for Safety, Ergonomic and Occupational Health Professions. The site contains a range of information on these topics, including links to news & trends, events, buyer's guide, new products and training grants.

Safety Forum
The Safety Forum "provides an opportunity to learn and teach about products and practices that cause harm. It is intended to service the public, the media, the legal community, policy makers, manufacturers and service providers in efforts to identify and correct hazardous products and practices." The site has links to consumer products, environment, hazardous practices, medicine & medical practices, occupational and transportation safety issues.

Scorecard
Scorecard is "an information service provided by Environmental Defense." It provides maps and ratings for environmental health issues that include: clean air, hazardous air pollutants, land contamination.

Tox Town
Sponsored by the National Library of Medicine (NLM), Tox Town is "an interactive guide to commonly encountered toxic substances." It is designed to provide information on: everyday locations where toxic chemical may be found; non-technical descriptions of chemicals links to selected, authoritative chemical information on the Internet; how the environment can impact human health; and Internet resources on environmental health topics.

The Trust for America's Health (TFAH)
TFAH is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect the health and safety of all communities, especially those most at risk of environmental and other public health threats. Their goal is to strengthen the nation's public health system through science-based research, community partnerships, education, and advocacy. The site contains links to state tracking factsheets, issues & campaigns, research & resources, and a community health forum.

USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)
The APHIS page contains relevant links to various animal and plant health resources. There are a number of links to animal related diseases (e.g. West Nile Virus, and Mad Cow disease).
