National Public Health Accreditation Program PHAB is home to the only voluntary, national accreditation program for U.S. public health departments. Accreditation provides a framework for health departments to identify performance improvement opportunities, demonstrate credibility, develop leadership, and improve relationships with the community. It serves as both an accountability and transparency mechanism and is a step on a journey to transform public health practice. Accreditation increases capacity to respond to public health emergencies, encourages the use of equity as a lens to identify and address health priorities, promotes a culture of quality improvement, and more. The 21st Century Learning Community (21C) is a group of states focused on intentional state-wide public health system transformation. 21C is rebuilding trust in public health by ensuring excellence and scaling innovative public health practices across the country. Learn more > Public Health Workforce Calculator The Public Health Workforce Calculator is a tool to help determine a health departments’ workforce needs. It utilizes information provided by health departments to estimate the number of full-time equivalents (FTEs) needed to ensure the provision of the Foundational Public Health Services (FPHS) in a community. Learn more > Foundational Public Health Services (FPHS) Capacity and Costing Tool PHAB is currently developing an FPHS Capacity and Costing tool that statewide, governmental public health systems can use to determine their level of current cost and implementation of the FPHS, and the capacities and costs needed to get to full implementation. The assessment tool identifies the needed expertise and capacity to fully achieve improved organizational systems and processes to deliver the FPHS. More details on the FPHS Capacity and Costing Assessment Tool will be shared in the coming months. With the recent CDC workforce and infrastructure grant award, we are creating another tool: the Public Health Infrastructure Data System. Sign up for the PHAB newsletter and follow us on LinkedIn to stay up to date on emerging opportunities to be a part of public health system transformation. If you have any questions or are interested in implementing any of these tool tools, email us at info@phaboard.org. 2021 2014 Kaye Bender- Excellence in Public Health: Health Department Accreditation and the Role of Governing Boards Other resources: Contact:
