Accreditation Resources

Accreditation Resources

These resources are meant to assist local Boards of Health to understand their role in accreditation. NALBOH is also looking for input from those of you who have been through the accreditation process and/or those of you who want to know how best you can assist your agency. Please send your comments to nalboh@badgerbay.co.

Association of State & Territorial Health Officials Resources

Although the Association of State & Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) does not develop resources specifically directed to Boards of Health, they do have resources related to accreditation focused on health officials and performance improvement staff. Listed below are a few key items available on the ASTHO website:

  • Accreditation webpage – check out the Featured Resources – some are new, others are tried and true.
  • Accreditation Library – particularly Domain 12 as it relates to governance; these examples will resonate most with Boards of Health.
  • Two ASTHO Experts videos that highlight accreditation readiness in light of COVID – Part 1 and Part 2.

Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) Resources

At previous NALBOH Annual Conferences, presentations were given specifically on PHAB: Please refer to them and other resources below!

National Public Health Accreditation Program

PHAB is home to the only voluntary, national accreditation program for U.S. public health departments. Accreditation provides a framework for health departments to identify performance improvement opportunities, demonstrate credibility, develop leadership, and improve relationships with the community. It serves as both an accountability and transparency mechanism and is a step on a journey to transform public health practice.

Accreditation increases capacity to respond to public health emergencies, encourages the use of equity as a lens to identify and address health priorities, promotes a culture of quality improvement, and more. Learn more >

Pathways Recognition Program

Pathways Recognition is a program designed to support performance improvement efforts, strengthen infrastructure, and facilitate public health system transformation for local, Tribal, and territorial public health departments not yet ready for accreditation. Pathways can facilitate accreditation readiness for eligible health departments intending to use the program as a step toward accreditation.

Pathways Recognition assesses health departments on the Foundational Capability measures in the PHAB initial accreditation Version 2022 Standards and Measures. Learn more.

21st Century Learning Community

Public health transformation cannot happen in isolation; innovation, collaboration, and shared learning are essential to drive the changes we need to meet current and future public health needs. The 21st Century Learning Community (21C) is a group of states focused on intentional state-wide public health system transformation. 21C is rebuilding trust in public health by ensuring excellence and scaling innovative public health practices across the country. Public Health Workforce Calculator

The Public Health Workforce Calculator is a tool to help determine a health departments’ workforce needs. It utilizes information provided by health departments to estimate the number of full-time equivalents (FTEs) needed to ensure the provision of the Foundational Public Health Services (FPHS) in a community. Learn more >

Foundational Public Health Services (FPHS) Capacity and Costing Tool

PHAB is currently developing an FPHS Capacity and Costing tool that statewide, governmental public health systems can use to determine their level of current cost and implementation of the FPHS, and the capacities and costs needed to get to full implementation. The assessment tool identifies the needed expertise and capacity to fully achieve improved organizational systems and processes to deliver the FPHS. More details on the FPHS Capacity and Costing Assessment Tool will be shared in the coming months.

With the recent CDC workforce and infrastructure grant award, we are creating another tool: the Public Health Infrastructure Data System. Sign up for the PHAB newsletter and follow us on LinkedIn to stay up to date on emerging opportunities to be a part of public health system transformation. If you have any questions or are interested in implementing any of these tool tools, email us at info@phaboard.org.
