1.1. Appropriate Leadership Models for 21^st Century Health

This session explores the challenge of promoting community health and leadership models for the 21st century.  It presents several modern leadership models and discusses its suitablity for community leaders in terms of their approach to effective health promotion.  Parts: Needs of community health, leadership models, and then a forum for discussion

Accreditation of the health department and the functions of the board of health have many common elements. Now that there are over 300 health departments in the accreditation process, PHAB has learned more about how the functions of governance relates to health department performance and quality improvement. This presentation will combine the lessons learned from PHAB with the description of the six functions of governance.

How can you ensure that board of health members work through complex issues in a deliberate way? Ineffective board structures can lead to poor decision making and a backlog of unaddressed issues. This session will review how high impact boards handle complex issues effectively.

Nebraska has been working towards accreditation through a state and local partnership. Nebraska like many states has a mix of urban and rural health departments with smaller staff sizes and larger geographic areas to cover. Through the development of a state and local partnership, Nebraska has been working towards accreditation. During this presentation participants will gain an understanding of how Nebraska is developing a Community of Practice for all local health departments to share the accreditation preparation experience. Information will be shared on the development of specific resources, and training opportunities. Finally, we will share strategies that some small rural health departments are using to prepare for accreditation in our state.

In Georgia, county boards of health are separate legal entities with the District Health Director serving as the CEO of the county health departments.  This presentation explores a health district’s creative approach to supporting its eight county boards of health with assessing and revising their by-laws.

Taking a public request for Board action into a new arena to actual regulation adoption requires being able to document the health related facts and navigating the political landscape with finesse. This session will document the process taken in Salt Lake County to address an issue affecting air quality and the steps to assure the efforts were successful.

Advances in technology have provided new tools to share health data with key stakeholders. However accessibility is not enough; the data needs to drive health improvement in communities. This session will identify best practices in using a community health data web-portal to move data to action with a specific focus on policymakers, the media, and community partners.
