Now Available! Governance in Action for Public Health is a web-based course designed to orient new board of health members to the field of public health and initial strategies that boards can take to influence population health outcomes. The Michigan Public Health Training Center is proud to offer this course in partnership with NALBOH and MPHI.
| The Region V Public Health Training Center is launching an updated version of its course, Governance in Action for Public Health , which aims to equip new board of health members with a basic understanding of public health and provide them with practical suggestions for supporting the work of local public health agencies and their leadership. Boards of health are often composed of members from interdisciplinary backgrounds who are critical stakeholders within the population health system and public health workforce. This training shows board of health members how to have a shared understanding of their role in public health in order to most effectively draw upon their diverse expertise. |
| The training begins with a public health primer which defines public health, components of the public health system, supporting local public health, population health outcomes, and the Ten Essential Services. The Six Functions of Public Health Governance defined by the National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH) - such as legal authority, policy development, resource stewardship, and partner engagement - are also covered in the training’s eight 15-20 minute modules. The topic of emergency preparedness has been a forefront issue for boards of health recently due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A new training module follows the setup and deployment of an emergency operations center to address the difficult community decisions that must be made by boards of health and others to mitigate the unfortunate effects of this infectious disease.
